The purpose of this ‘Sound Map’ project is to share my research, readings, compositions and recordings as I explore the world of soundscapes and acoustic ecology.
‘All research into sound must conclude with silence…’ (Schafer, 1977, ‘The Soundscape’)
‘If we – who are specialists in listening and sound-making – are not concerned about the acoustic environment, then who will be? Some biologists have made it their calling to use their special knowledge and education to look at the natural world from the ecological perspectives. Why then should composers and musicians not make it their calling to use their special knowledge and education to listen to the world from the ecological perspective?’ (Westerkamp, 2002, ‘Linking Soundscape Composition and Acoustic Ecology’)
As I make recordings of soundscapes, I’ll try and make them available through this site. Check out the Sound Map archive to listen.
